Lauwersmeer National Park

Former Wadden Sea estuary turned freshwater lake in northern Netherlands

The Lauwersmeer is the former estuary of the Lauwers river, sealed off from the Wadden Sea in 1969 and gradually turned into a freshwater lake. Konik horses and Highland cattle graze the park to keep the landscape open.
