Kalevalsky National Park

Old-growth boreal pine forest, bogs and lakes on the Finnish border in Karelia

Kalevalsky protects one of the last old-growth boreal pine forests in Europe, on a flat landscape of 400 lakes and 250 streams left by the Pleistocene ice sheets. It sits on the Baltic Shield, whose 3 billion-year-old Precambrian rocks are the oldest in Europe.
