Hortobágy National Park

Flat alkaline steppe, wetlands and grazing herds in eastern Hungary

Hortobágy is the largest semi-natural grassland in Europe, a treeless puszta where Hungarian Grey cattle, racka sheep and Nonius horses are tended by herdsmen such as the mounted csikós. Traditional T-shaped sweep wells dot the plain, and part of the park is a dark sky preserve.
