Hoge Kempen National Park

Heathland and pine forest on a plateau in Belgian Limburg

The park is mostly heathland and pine forest on the Kempens Plateau, a step of Ice Age Meuse deposits covered with wind-blown sand. Six gateways lead in, each with its own theme, from a cosmodrome to a former bee mating station in an old gravel pit.

1Mechelse HeideA vast stretch of purple heathland reached from the Maasmechelen gateway.
2PietersheimA Romanesque castle ruin at the Pietersembos, serving as the Lanaken gateway.
3Station AsA lookout tower resembling a coal drilling tower, recalling the region's industrial past.
